The painting process
Dyeing the fabric is an elaborate process. Petra first dyed the fabric in the video with bluewood and turmeric, creating a beautiful, deep background color. Then, she selects the most suitable leaves based on their shape and composition. This composition is important because the leaves must contain a lot of tannins to produce a beautiful color. Petra then applies them to the fabric in a natural-looking manner. Watch the video to see how the leaves are removed from the fabric after it has been steamed. Also, notice the beautiful veins they leave behind. It's a three-dimensional process!
The pigments she uses range from turmeric yellow and cochineal pink to chlorophyll. She intensifies the colors with iron, mordants the fabric with alum and soy, and creates a different color effect with copper. The manual nature of this process gives Petra extensive control over the colors your garment will have. This allows her to tailor the garment entirely to your color profile, and the dyeing process is much less harmful to the environment than conventional dyeing methods. The result? A creation, especially for you, with a small footprint.
